“A Fresh Start” with Benjamin Moore

Being an interior designer has its ups and downs, but my favorite part is when I can really make an impact in someone’s life. So when Benjamin Moore called to ask if I wanted to help the most deserving mother of two girls design a space for her own, you know I said yes!

Meet Grace -- She recently purchased a new house for herself and her two daughters right outside of Chicago. Since she is such a caring mother, she ended up dedicating the bulk of her interior design budget to making her girls feel right at home. This left her own bedroom feeling dark and a little drab. Enter me (hi!) and my friends at Benjamin Moore. Our mission was to create a tranquil yet feminine space where Grace could relax after a long day working at the hospital and parenting.

When we arrived, her bedroom furniture was comprised of a bed, a nightstand, and a treadmill. The space felt a little cold and grey. The walls were a muddy-beige, a color most-certainly not fit for a supermom like Grace. However, with some fresh paint from Benjamin Moore and a little guidance, we were ready to turn her bedroom into the mood-boosting space she deserved!

When I think about how to make the biggest impact on a room, I always go back to paint. You can change the entire feel of the place with just one or two cans! But when was the last time you tried to find you perfect shade? It may look great in the store, but what about in your home? So then you buy some brushes, paint a few swatches, and see how you feel. You check it in different lights, take some pictures, maybe even call a friend. Personally, if I can spend that time looking for some great bedding, picking out lighting, or even just catching up on Shitts’s Creek.– I’m super interested. That’s why I selected Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year, Aegean Teal 2136-40 in Aura Matte to help transform this drab space.

When Benjamin Moore embarks on choosing a color of the year, they do not take it lightly. Not only do they take in influences from design, art, fashion, culture, and the surrounding environment – they also select from a library of over 3,500 colors! But really, what they’re looking for at the end of the day is something that balances both modern-day relevance with long-lasting appeal. Which makes sense, right? I mean, paint is easy to get onto the wall, but you don’t want to be changing it twice a year. So when I was looking for the perfect color for Grace, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the rich and warm tones that are captured in Aegean Teal 2136-40 in Aura Matte.

Aegean Teal 2136-40 in Aura Matte just sounds like a vacation in itself. Like, let’s travel to Greece – I’ll bring snacks. But even with this gorgeous blue, we needed something to really give it that extra bit of polish. That’s the thing about wall paint – it’s better with a partner. Fabulous on its own, but better with a little something extra. We chose Benjamin Moore’s Decorators White to line the trim and called it a day. Modern, fresh, and serene.

Once the walls were done, we were off to the races. I mean, it’s easy to work with the color of the year! I chose a neutral bedspread to ground the room and topped it with some darker-toned pillows and one of those fabulous blankets that you’ve probably seen people trying to knit all over the internet. Love an end of the bed blanket! So cozy.

I was so lucky to find this gorgeous jute rug that gave the floor that added a bit of texture It so needed. We finished the room off with wall sconces on either side of the bed for reading lighting, some light, and airy curtains, and a few plants to give Grace a little bit of nature. Nothing boosts a mood like the combo of a bringing the outside in, and a fabulous paint color.

Grace and her family have been through so much this year, and this color was the perfect way to bring in some positive energy. It doesn’t fight with the rest of the house and serves as a hopeful reminder of good times to come.

I feel so lucky to have been a small part of Grace and her girls’ journey. Thank you so much Benjamin Moore for helping me use the power of paint to bring a little more joy into this deserving family’s lives.
